Networking involves building connections and they can be with people who share the same profession, similar industry, or interests. To get the most out of it, you have to be in the mindset that this will open doors to new opportunities and ultimately, more referrals. First, consider what you have to offer and go into a function with an intention. For example, is it to work on your social skills or to exchange ideas and expand on your interest? Second, allow curiosity to lead the way and ask lots of questions beyond someone's work life. Finally, set a goal such as connecting with two new people who you've never met in the group before.
